Biography of the Keynote Speaker
is professor of computer science and scientific director of the Research Institute of Mathematics and Computing Science of the University of Groningen. He got the Dr.sc.techn. degree in Computer Engineering (Informationstechnik) from Dresden University of Technology. Prior to joining the University of Groningen in 1991, he held research positions at the University of Wuppertal, the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg, the Academy of Sciences in Berlin, and Dresden University of Technology. In 1989 he was awarded an Alexander von Humboldt scholarship of the Federal Republic of Germany. Nicolai Petkov is the author of two books and 100 scientific papers and member of the editorial boards of various journals. His current research focuses on computer simulations and understanding of the visual system of the brain and on the development of effective computer vision algorithms. Nicolai Petkov
