Abstract

The main research focus in the Computer Vision Group at Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) is vision systems for autonomous navigation of unmanned vehicles, including ground, sea, and air vehicles on Earth and rovers and landers in planetary exploration. I will present an overview of research issues, progress, and open issues in these areas. This will include multi-sensor terrain perception for off-road navigation on Earth, pedestrian detection for safely operating robotic vehicles around people, and applications in solar system exploration. Solar system exploration applications have included obstacle detection, position estimation, and other capabilities for Mars rovers, terrain-relative navigation and hazard detection for landers, and landmark recognition for orbit estimation around asteroids and comets.
