Biography of the Keynote Speaker
is a professor of Computer Science at the Faculty of Science of the University of Bologna, Italy. He obtained the "Laurea" degree in "Scienze dell' Informazione" from the University of Pisa, Italy in February 1978, and the PhD degree in Computer Science from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, U.K. in June 1985. From June 1979 to May 1985 he was a research associate at the Computing Laboratory of the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. During these years he carried out research on fault tolerance issues in distributed systems, and design and development of communication protocols for local and wide area networks. From October 1985 to April 1989, he was an independent consultant for a number of medium and large European ICT companies. In April 1989 he joined the Dipartimento di Matematica Pura ed Applicata of the University of L'Aquila, Italy as an associate professor. In November 1990 he became a full professor at the University of Bologna. He is active in several European research initiatives. His research interests include fault tolerant distributed computing, distributed real-time and multimedia systems, and middleware and communication support for large scale distributed applications.
