Mohammed Ghanbari is a professor of video networking at the School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering at the University of Essex, United Kingdom. He is best known for his pioneering work on layered video coding for ATM networks, now known as SNR scalability in the standard video codecs, which earned him the IEEE Fellowship in 2001. He has been at the forefront of many video networking issues, such as the design of various types of video codecs, motion estimation, loss concealment, video transcoding, and video quality measurement; all this work has had significant impacts on the current development of these research topics. He has registered for 11 international patents, published more than 450 technical papers and has been the author of four books. His book on standard video codecs received the Rayleigh Award as the best book of 2000. He is a Fellow of IEEE and of IET and CEng.
